Maybe I’ll Live on a Sailboat?

Lauren Keba Sailing

While trekking to Cuidad Perdida, Kelly and I were fortunate to meet Tom & Christian– a couple from the Netherlands that has been sailing the world for the past 5 years. And if you think you couldn’t handle the sailboat lifestyle, you haven’t seen this boat. It was an absolutely stunning piece of art. An incredibly well-designed, streamlined boat, with really everything you could need to feel comfortable…as in they have an espresso machine aboard.

Tom and Christian were kind enough to invite us over the night after completing the trek. Kelly and I thought we would just pop over, see the boat and say hello, but we ended up having the most relaxing and enjoyable time with the sailors and a lovely newly-wed couple (whom were also in the trekking group). If you ever decide to become a sailor, or know of sailors, you should share this hobby with them: beer collection. Tom and Christian have been doing just that and have accumulated beer from all over the world that they graciously share with guests. Yes, Tom and Christian are indeed the best people ever.

Meeting people like Tom and Christian is one of my favorite parts of traveling. You get to see another way of living life. Had I ever contemplated living on a sailboat while exploring the world? The thought had never crossed my mind! But now that I had met people that were doing it; it was awe-inspiring. I had never even thought about sailing before and it opened my mind to the thought that there was more than one way to tackle life than the typical work at an office job, buy a house and get married. And if you’re doing this, or did this, I don’t mean it in a disdainful way! It’s what I grew up knowing and until this point, expecting for myself. This experience of traveling is just opening my mind to all the new possibilities and approaches to living life. And that is why meeting people is my favorite part about traveling; you get to see another way of life that you never considered, you get to thinking about how you want the rest of your time to play out…or at least fantasize about all the endless possibilities!
